A House or Apartment: How to Decide?
Is it better to rent your apartment without owning it or start paying on a mortgage for a home that will be yours some day? There are many pros and cons for both buying a home and renting one and this is a decision that you should take time to consider both options before making the final decision. When you consider buying a home, or even renting one, there are some things that you need to consider such as when you are the owner or renter of a home you are responsible the any routine maintenance and mowing the yard. If this would be a hardship on you for any reason then it might be better to consider renting an apartment.
When you are renting an apartment there are people that take care of these maintenance problems and doing the mowing which makes living in an apartment a low maintenance choice. When you live in an apartment your neighbors can be living next door, or right across the hallway, but when you live in a house you still have neighbors, but they are not as close and can give you more peace of mind and privacy.
The main deciding factor is your budget and what you can afford. Yes, the amount you pay in rent each month may be close to what you would pay for a mortgage payment, but when you figure in all the extras like property taxes, the utility bills, trash pickup, maintenance and more, it may be cheaper to stay in the apartment. Most landlords will take care of the sewer and water bills, and the electric bill may be smaller because of the size of the apartment, and lawn and maintenance is taken care of.
Before you decide whether to continue renting or look at the option of buying a home, you should check to see what your credit rating is. If your credit rating is poor, there is a good chance that you will not be able to buy a home. When you are deciding between an apartment and a house, figure out the square footage you need and look at houses based on this information so you can see just how much a house with this amount of space would cost.
Here are some questions that you might want to ask yourself before making a uniformed decision.
- In regard to buying a home do you see yourself living her for an indefinite period of time or do you want the option to just be able to pack up and leave when you want to.
- Do you want the freedom to decorate your place the way you want to, throw a party without fear of disturbing your neighbors with the loud noises, and do you want the freedom to have a pet without being told what type of pet? If yes, a house would be the solution.
- Do you want a private garage and a spacious yard where the kids can play and you can put in a flower and vegetable garden?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then it might be wise to consider looking into buying a home and moving out of that apartment.
